NOTE: Renaming a MS SQL server is not recommended, but if you are forced to do so, here are the steps needed. This assumes that the old server name is "old-name", and the new desired name is "new-name".
  1. Change the server name in Windows
  2. sp_dropserver 'old-name'
    GO
  3. sp_addserver 'new-name', local
    GO
  4. UPDATE msdb.dbo.sysjobs
    SET originating_server = 'new-name'
    WHERE originating_server = 'old-name'
